AGM REPORT

Priors Players AGM attracted 30 members for a report and discussion on the Society’s year and the way ahead. The evening was opened by the President, Rod Sutcliffe, and there were reports from the Treasurer, Social Secretary and Chairman. Priors Players awards were given to Amber Thacker, Tony Styles and Stephen Leach. The Committee donated a buffet and a wine tasting provided a convivial end to the evening (the wines were sourced from the village shop and the most liked will be bought for future productions).

Derek Kane, as Secretary, reviewed the minutes of the previous AGM and reported on matters arising. He has provided excellent support to the committee throughout the year.

The Treasurer, Jane Snow, reported a healthy financial balance with a little over £4000 operating capital. Our Auditor, Chris Gabriel, supported by all the members, thanked Jane for maintaining an excellent set of accounts and all her hard work for the society.

Jenny Turner, in her role as Social Secretary, gave a report of all the theatre trips and events that had been organised for members throughout the year. Highlights included Hobson’s Choice at the Watermill; the cast party for those in the Herbal Bed and the newly started Fish’n’chips suppers at the Coronation. Jenny updated on the changes to local theatre with the closure of the Haymarket in Basingstoke and upcoming amateur and professional productions. Links with other am dram groups have been made and will be built on this year. Jenny is stepping down as Social Secretary and was thanked for all that she has done – she has pleasingly been persuaded to remain on the Committee to help the new Social Secretary, Laura Wurzer.

The Chairman, Stephen Leach, reminded members of the wonderful village production of Joseph that had been led by the enthusiastic and energetic Dodie Marsden in June. A great success supported by Priors Players in terms of backing, equipment and members’ involvement. The Herbal Bed, by Peter Whelan, had been a challenging and complex play to stage and had identified new talent in the village including Amelia Anstess (so young age 9) and Amber Thacker (so vivacious and graceful). As our reviewer, Ruth Widen, reported “an ambitious choice for an amateur dramatic company but in all the Players excelled themselves”.

Three prizes are awarded as part of the AGM and this year Amber Thacker was awarded the Pearce Memorial Piano for her excellent debut in the Herbal Bed; Tony Styles was awarded the Mole for his outstanding contribution to Priors Players during the year; and Stephen Leach received the director’s award, the Rogers Memorial Bowl, for his support in the Herbal Bed.
